Herkimer boys win team title;
Wallace, O'Hara tie for medalist
Balance key for
Magicians, who send
five to Seven Oaks
                                        May 21

ORISKANY FALLS - It's been a very
successful 2012 for the Herkimer boys
golf team.

Monday, the Magicians, who finished
unbeaten in the Center State Conference,
added a Section III, Class B championship
to its resume.

The victory is the first since at least 1974
and possibly ever, according to head
coach Scott Kurdziolek.

"These boys have been playing Herkimer
golf since they were in 7th or 8th grade,"
Kurdziolek said.

"They are dedicated and knew this was
their chance to take it all, especially since
we came so close last year. We are also
deep. I have seven boys that can score
medalist at any given time. It was difficult
to only bring six."

Jesse Licari (80), Nick de Jong (82), Ryan
Stilwell (84), Andrew Stilwell (84) and Matt
Borek (84) led the Magicians to the title.

Herkimer's five-person total of 414 was 16
strokes better than second-place Bishop
Ludden. All five Herkimer scorers qualified
for Thursday's Section III Tournament at
Seven Oaks Golf Course in Hamilton.

The first round of sectionals is Thursday
and the final round is Saturday.

Bishop Grimes' William Wallace and Port
Byron's Dan O'Hara tied for the individual
championship after carding 77s. Wallace
and O'Hara are co-champions and will
lead a field of 23 players from the Class C
Tournament, who qualified for sectional
play.
