Lojewski shoots 67
to take City-Am lead
                            July 16
UTICA - After turning 50, many players,
understandably, jump to the Seniors Division at
the Greater Utica City-Amateur.

Not Kevin Lojewski, who at age 54, thought he still
owns enough game to challenge the young guys
for the overall title.

During Saturday's first round at Valley View,
Lojewski was the best player on the course,
carding a 4-under-par 67 to take a one stroke
lead over John Migliore, Andy Hobika and Paul
Paladino entering Sunday's final round.

"I planned on playing in the Seniors Division," said
Lojewski who won the Utica City-Am in 1995. "But I
have been hitting it well and long enough to be
competitive. If I think I can compete with the
younger guys, why not give it another try?"

Lojewski made two bogeys (Nos. 12 and 18), four
birdies (Nos. 2, 6, 14 and 17), and holed out his
pitching wedge from just over 100 yards for an
eagle 2 on the par-4 15th.

Rich Brooks, Jeff LaGase, Steve Lowe and Mike
DelMedico shot 69s and are two strokes back.
Mike Blais, Mike Zurek and defending champion
Steve Conley shot 70 and are three off Lojewski's
lead.

Lojewski is a veteran of the city-am battles, and
realizes that it will take another great round to hold
off the likes of Conley and Migliore, who teamed
with Brooks to win Friday's best-ball tournament.

"If I can get my driver under control, I think I can
play well," Lojewski said. "It was errant today. I am
rolling it great and if I keep the ball in front of me, I
think I have as good a chance as anyone."

Pete Moskal leads the Seniors Division (50-over)
after an impressive 2-under-par 69. Greg
Bushinger and Jim Day are tied for second after
posting 74s.

Barry Wengert (73) leads the Super Seniors
(62-over) by three strokes over Chris Fulmer.

In the inaugural year for the Super Duper Seniors
Division (70-over), Ray Alessandrini (76) owns a
one-stroke advantage over Roy Barnes.

There were a total of 123 entries across the four
divisions. The low 30 plus ties made the cut in the
Men's Open Division.
