Petty breaks through with win; Halwig the lone local qualifier

BALDWINSVILLE - Rachel Halwig spent the
past few seasons sharpening her skills
against some of the top boys in the Center
State Conference as part of the Remsen
boys golf team.
This season, Halwig, a sophomore, decided
to measure her ability against her peers, by
joining the Holland Patent girls golf team.
Tuesday at Foxfire Golf Course, Halwig
found out she can play with the best girls in
the area after shooting 90 to tie for eighth at
the Section III Tournament.
"I'm ecstatic," Halwig said, who posted a pair
of 45s. It's really amazing."
Halwig now heads to the New York State
Public High School Championships on June
10-12 at SUNY Delhi.
"Just to make it to states was my goal for the
year," said Halwig, who is the only area
player to make the top nine.
Baldwinsville's Lauren Petty won medalist
Tuesday with a 76. The victory was very
meaningful for the senior, who has been so
close to the sectional title. Petty finished
second in 2009 and 2010.
"It feels great to know that all that hard work
paid off in my senior year," Petty said.
"Now I hope i can contend at states. I
finished third last year, so maybe I can do
better this year."
Auburn's Larissa Carter was second with a
78 and CBA's Mary Fletcher finished third
with an 82.
Other qualifiers were: Fayetteville-Manlius'
Meghan Kingsley (86), Alex Seabury (87)
and Carly Kidd (87); Jamesville-Dewitt's
Victoria Roney (89) and F-M's Maria
Mintskovsky (90).
Rome Free Academy's MaryAnn Bulawa and
Nicolette Darois each shot 91 to finish tied
for 11th, one stroke back of the qualifying
number. Bulawa, only a freshman, made the
state tournament in 2009 and 2010.
Whitesboro's Erin Senior shot 93 to tie for
16th. RFA's Lillith Bulawa (98) tied for 26th,
while Camden's Jordan Zalepeski and RFA's
Lauren Felice shot 99s to tie for 28th.
Halwig admittedly didn't player her best golf,
so that should be a comforting thought,
knowing she has room for improvement
heading into states.
"My driving was great, pretty much all day,"
Halwig said. "My putting wasn't very good at
all. I will be living on the greens the next few
weeks."
One thing is for certain, Halwig is very
pleased with her decision to play against the
girls.
"I really wanted to see how I could do with
the girls, and I had fun this year," Halwig
said, mentioning the girls are much more
sociable on the course than the boys.
F-M won the Division I team award and
Jamesville DeWitt captured the Division II
crown.
Each of the state qualifiers received a
complementary golf bag from John
MacDougall, President of Nice 'N Easy
grocery shops.
