Derek Bard shot 4-over-par 75 Sunday
to finish third at the New York State
Federation High School Tournament at
Bethpage Black Golf Course in
Farmingdale.

Matt Lowe of Section XI shot 1-over 72
to win by two shots over Xander
McDonald-Smith.

Bard, the two-time defending Section III
champion, qualified for the Federation
Tournament for the first time with a
fourth-place finish at last week's state
tournament at Cornell University.

He took advantage of the opportunity
by playing well on the famed layout
that has hosted the 2002 and 2009
U.S. Opens.

"Yesterday I played terrible in the
practice round," Bard said. "I didn't
know what to expect going into today. I
just hit shots and stayed in the present
out there.

"As for my round, I thought it was a
decent score. That's the toughest
course I've ever played. We played it
pretty much from all the way back
(7,020 yards). Playing Bethpage Black
was amazing. It's definitely the
toughest course I've ever played and
just being able to play holes that the
pros played in the U.S. Open is a cool
feeling."

The New Hartford sophomore got off to
a rough initiation to Bethpage Black.
He double bogeyed the 1st hole, but
moved back to even par with birdies on
Nos. 2 and 3. Another double bogey
on the sixth hole put him at 2-over at
the turn. He played the incoming nine
at 2-over, making seven pars and two
bogeys (Nos. 10 and 12).

"I doubled No. 1, but I really didn't get
anxious," Bard said. "I stayed calm and
hit two nice irons on 2 and 3."
