North, Ilion sweep honors at
CSC Medalist Tournament
                                             June 2

COOPERSTOWN - The 2011
Center State Conference Medalist
Tournament came down to a playoff
between Ilion teammates, Dan North and
Dan Reese.

North made a par 5 on the 18th - the first
playoff hole - to defeat Reese, and win
overall medalist honors Thursday at
Leatherstocking Golf Club.

Reese, the 2009 champion, didn't leave
Cooperstown empty handed, as he
teamed with North to claim an
unprecedented third straight team title.

"It feels great," said North. "It's pretty
awesome. I always play well here and I
thought I had a good chance coming in."

North, who was co-champion at the Class
B Tournament on May 23 at Oneida
Community Golf Club, didn't seem to
have a chance to claim his first CSC
Medalist title, after playing his opening
six holes at 6-over par.

"I told myself to try and par out to finish
the front nine and then I played great on
the back," said the Ilion junior.

Sparked by three straight birdies on Nos.
13, 14 and 15, North shot 3-under on the
back to tie Reese at 3-over 75.

Reese began his round on No. 1 and
was even par through his opening 15
holes, but bogeyed the final three
coming in, and had to wait to see if his 75
would hold up.

It didn't, and on the first playoff hole he
hit his second shot into the trees lining
the right side of the fairway. He then hit a
good shot just to get the ball near the
putting surface, but found the bunker
over the back of the 18th green, leaving
a downhill bunker shot to a green that
sloped away from him. His blast out of
the sand rolled about 50 feet past the
hole and after missing, North two-putted
for the win.

"I'm more disappointed int he 8-foot putt
that lipped out on No. 18 (in regulation),"
said Reese, a senior, who won the
individual title in 2009. He did however
take solace in his team's success.

"It is the first time any team ever won it
three times in a row," Reese said. "So
that feels good. But, hats off to North ...
he played well."

Canastota's Ian Campbell shot 79 to tie
for third along with Old Forge's Damon
Kull. Sauquoit Valley's Ryan Stalker and
Herkimer's Teddy Borek shot 80s to tie
for fifth.

Trevor Hash (Sauquoit Valley), Jeff Flynn
(Cooperstown), Dante Migliore
(Frankfort), Colin Criss (Old Forge) and
2010 champion, Cody Homer (Mount
Markham) shot 81s to tie for seventh.

Old Forge finished second in the team
competition with a 160 total. Sauquoit
Valley (161), Frankfort-Schuyler (166)
and Canastota (167) rounded out the top
five.
