HAMILTON - Derek Bard has a plan
in defending his Section III title at
Seven Oaks Golf Course.
His plan worked out well during a
warm, breezy first round Thursday,
as the New Hartford sophomore shot
even-par 72 to grab a four-stroke
lead over Remsen's Keith Smith and
2009 champion Eric Edmunds.
"When you play here, you have to
mentally prepare," said Bard, who
Thursday. "It's such a difficult
course, and with the wind whipping
today it made it even harder.
"I just concentrate on making good
swings and staying in the present. I
know if I do that and focus on the
next shot, everything else will take
care of itself."
Bard made three birdies (Nos. 12,
13, 18) and three bogeys (Nos. 6,
10, 15) in his round, and leads 23
players into Saturday's final round.
The top nine players after Saturday
will represent Section III at the New
York State Tournament, June 5 and
6 at Cornell University's Robert
Trent Jones Golf Course.
Old Forge's Colin Criss shot 77, and
is tied for fourth with General
Brown's Chadd Call. Another stroke
back were Cody Homer (Mount
Markham), Jeff Baldetti
(Skaneateles), Chuck Coppola
(Whitesboro), Seth Adams
(Camden) and Patrick Kneram
(Indian River).
Others qualifying for Saturday are:
Jarrett Sweet (Alex Bay) 79; Alec
Bard (New Hartford) 79; Joel
Jakubowicz (Wboro) 79; John Clare
(West Genesee) 79; 15. Dan
Dunnigan (Phoenix) 80; Connor
Salanger (West Genesee) 80; Mike
McIntosh (Chittenango) 80; 18. Joe
Felicia (Marcellus) 81; Garrett
Drejza (Clinton) 81; Kyle Renwick
(VVS) 81; Mike Kalil (Notre Dame)
81; Ryan Fero (F-M) 81; Luke Ciulla
(Baldwinsville) 81.
Play begins at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
Several local players just missed the
cut, including Herkimer's Nick de
Jong and Ilion's Dan North, who both
posted 82s. Ilion's Dan Reese shot
83, while Notre Dame's Sean Wuest
and Old Forge's Damon Kull shot 84.
Smith, a senior, made a late surge
Thursday to turn a good round into
a very good one, closing his day
with two late birdies.
"My iron play was really strong all
day," said Smith, who began his
round on No. 6. "Then I finished with
two tap-in birdies on three and four."
This will be Smith's third appearance
in the final round at sectionals. He is
hoping the third time is the charm as
he missed out on states the
previous two times.
"I put myself in a good position
heading into Saturday," said Smith.
"And that was my main goal coming
in."
Bard, a three-time class champion,
is looking for his third trip to the
state tournament. But first, he'll be
looking to win his second straight
Section III championship.
If he executes his plan as well as he
did Thursday, he'll be very difficult to
catch.
