BREMERTON, Wash. - Through his
stellar high school and junior career,
New Hartford Derek Bard has played in
some huge events.

None really can match what Bard
experienced in finishing 17th while
competing against 156 of the best
junior players at the United States
Junior-Amateur this week at the
Olympic Course at Cold Mountain Golf
Club.

Bard first made the final 64 after two
days of stroke play where he shot
79-71 to finish tied for 36th.

He then defeated Anthony Vecchiarelli
of Agawam, Mass., 3&2 Wednesday to
make the Round of 32. On Thursday,
Bard's run came to an end with a 2&1
defeat to Venezuela's Juan Yumar, but
just getting to compete on that stage is
what he'll remember most.

"This is definitely the biggest
tournament that I've played in," said
Bard, who failed to qualify for this
tournament in 2009 and 2010.

"The other one that compares to it is
the junior PGA (that I'll play) in early
August. I qualified for it last year and
hopefully this tourney will give me more
experience for that one. But this is the
biggest one I've played and certainly
has been the most exciting."

Early on it appeared Bard would be
moving on to the Round of 16, as he
built a 3UP advantage after making par
on the first five holes.

Yumar then won Nos 6 and 9, before
knotting the match with a birdie on the
par-4 10th hole.

Bard, a junior this fall, then bogeyed
three out of his next four holes to fall 3
down with four to play. Bard extended
the match with a 10-foot par save on
the par-4 15th, and stayed alive with a
birdie on the par-3 16th, but Yumar
closed out the win with a tying par on
the par-4 17th hole.

"I didn't make any putts today, like I did
yesterday," said Bard. "I started
making them at the end to keep the
match going, but it was a little too late."

Now that he has a taste of competing
in the biggest event in junior golf, Bard
is ready for more, beginning with the
PGA Junior Championship from Aug.
2-5 at Sycamore Hills in Fort Wayne,
Indiana.

"I can take a lot out of this," Bard said.
"It showed me that whenever you get
on this level, everyone is really good
and it just depends on what kind of day
you have that decides the outcome."
