Alec Bard pulls away to win State Boys Amateur

Jakubowicz ties for
12th in Junior Division

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Alec Bard
hasn't been playing his best golf after
surprising the field with a 9th-place
finish at the state high school
tournament in early June as just a 7th
grader.
That all changed with two great rounds
of golf that earned Bard the New York
State Boys Amateur title at McGregor
Links Country Club.
"This is one of, if not my best,
accomplishments in golf." said Bard,
who finished with a two-day total of
7-over 151 to win by four strokes over
Crag Burn Golf Club's Brad Belote.
Bard began the day tied with Belote
after shooting 77 during Tuesday's
opening round.
Finding fairways was crucial for Bard,
and an improved putting day
Wednesday helped him pull away from
Belote.
"I drove the ball great both days," Bard
said. "Yesterday I putted terribly, but
today i putted much better and hit the
ball and chipped solidly all week."
There really wasn't any indication that
he was playing well enough to
accomplish such a big victory.
"After states I got into a bit of a slump,"
Bard said. "I came here and in the
practice round I played poorly and
something must of happened over
night, because I came out the next
morning and hit it great."
In the Junior Division, Whitesboro's
Joel Jakubowicz led the local
contingent, finishing tied for 12th after
an 11-over-par total of 155.
He finished 10 strokes behind
Westwood Country Club's James
Blackwell, who posted a winning score
of 1-over-par 145.
Clinton's Garrett Drejza (162) tied for
27th. Whitesboro's Chuck Coppola
and Old Forge's Colin Criss (165) tied
for 41st. West Winfield's Cody Homer
bounced back from a rough opening
round to post a 173 total to tie for 60th.
