Bard, Warriors repeat at 7th Annnual Warrior Classic

May 7, 2011
WHITESBORO - In the end, the 2011
Warrior Classic looked an awful lot like
last year's event.
New Hartford's Derek Bard shot even-par
71 to repeat as individual medalist, and
host Whitesboro repeated as team
champion with a 390 total.
Bard, who also shot 71 to win last year, is
focused on making a bigger improvement
from his freshman to sophomore season,
than he did the previous year.
"Last August I changed my swing and
made it more flat," said Bard, who, in
2010, won the Section III Tournament and
placed 10th at states.
"I struggled with it in the beginning of the
year," said Bard, who earlier this month
fired a 31 during a match at
Westmoreland Golf Course. "But now I've
been more solid lately, and hopefully it will
get better in the future."
Skaneateles' Jeff Baldetti and
Whitesboro's Joel Jakubowicz and David
Egresits tied for second with 3-over-par
74s. Camden's Seth Adams and
Skaneateles' Seth Adams shot 75s to tie
for fifth.
Alec Mosher (Marcellus) and Justin
Sisson (Skaneateles) shot 76 to tie for
7th. New Hartford's Alex Malta (77) was
solo ninth and Whitesboro's Bradee
Holtslag and Old Forge's Colin Criss shot
78s to tie for 10th.
The Warriors won with a five-player total
of 390. The Spartans were a close
second at 399. Skaneateles (406),
Marcellus (407), Camden (416) and Old
Forge (442) rounded out the top 6.
"Anytime you win a tournament like this, it
is great," Whitesboro head coach Gene
Kaczor said.
"I thought coming in that New Hartford has
been playing really well and they would
be tough to beat. Plus Skaneateles and
Marcellus are good teams, along with
Camden and Old Forge."
Several teams were missing some of its
top players due to SATs and other
commitments. Camden senior Jack Keil
was one of those who couldn't play in the
event.
"Things may have turned out differently if
everyone had all of their top players,"
Kaczor said. "But we'll never know what
would've happened."
Chuck Coppola (81), Sam Tornatore (83)
and Kyle Kupiec (85) rounded out the
scoring for the Warriors.
Whitesboro's Alex Egresits (81) and
Austin Odell (90) played for Bishop
Ludden for Saturday's event.
Bard birdied Nos. 5, 10, 12 and 16. He
dropped shots on Nos. 1, 4, 9 (his
starting hole) and 17.
Bard uses every event in April and early
May to gear up for the big tournaments at
the end of the month.
"I hope to make states and compete ...
maybe a top five," Bard said. "That's my
goal every year. It's to compete at states
and have a high finish."
